Description

Charming 18-19th century Fondouk located in the noble part of the Medina.

Fondouks or Funduqs also known as Caravanserais were historic buildings that were traditionally used to accommodate travelers and their animals, as well as store their goods, during their trading journeys between sub-Saharan Africa and North Africa.

The property is structured around four courtyards and patios, one opening to a vast swimming pool. The buildings are traditional in style and eco-friendly, mainly because of the sustainable and locally sourced materials used (in the first place, clay). The established fruit trees and many outdoor areas offer a tranquil reprieve in Taroudant’s Medina.

Since the original build, every detail has been considered, thought of and upgraded to transform this historic property into its current sophisticated state. The antique Berber materials were crafted by the owner in the anti-Atlas foothill, and the colours, lighting and refined furnishings have all been carefully chosen to create the timeless atmosphere enjoyed in these walls.

Entrance hall provides plenty of storage space, a room and a laundry room.

A beautiful patio is decorated with a fountain that offers a refreshing touch to this space.

A living area comprises a TV/Media room with a seating area and fireplace. A small study/double bedroom with a shower room/cloakroom.

The ground floor area features a second pleasant courtyard with tropical fruit trees and living spaces such as lounge area with banquettes.

With a large seating area looking over tropical trees, a dining room that can seat up to 12 people, and a fireplace, visitors can enjoy dining al fresco or a charming soiree and appetizer.

Visitors can access a large kitchen with a central island, larders and storage areas, and modern appliances at the Orange Tree courtyard. This space offers a vast outside dining table seating approximately 20 people and a massage room that will delight guests.

The Palm Tree Courtyard comprises a swimming pool, living spaces such as a changing room, shower room, cloakroom, lounge area with banquettes, a Mexican garden and a sunbathing area, perfect for warmer days to refresh and relax under the sun.

The first floor offers a large double-aspect drawing room with a fireplace looking over the garden and the old riad and a fridge mini-bar, kitchen, room service.

A spacious suite on the 1st floor comprises a small seating area with fireplace, dressing area and en suite bathroom with bath and separate shower.

One comfortable main bedroom with an en suite bathroom and two double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms can be found on the 1st floor.

The first floor has another double bedroom with a fireplace and en suite bathroom (bath and separate shower) with a balcony and terrace to enjoy the surrounding landscape.

The second floor welcomes visitors with two double bedrooms with a fireplace, an en suite bathroom (bath and separate shower), and a dressing room/TV room with a balcony overlooking the garden.

Two terraces with seating areas offer the perfect spot to enjoy the views and bring plenty of light to the inside. The largest terrace comprises a long banquette/pergola facing West for sunsets, a sunbathing area with sunbeds, a summer kitchen, a shower and a dining area.

All the living rooms and most bedrooms have reversible air-conditioned for winter and summer.

This property is exceptional in the sense that it is right in the heart of the medina. It is light, peaceful and spacious, therefore suitable for a large family or group.

Taroudant is located East of Agadir on the road to Ouarzazate and the Sahara Desert and South of Marrakesh. Nestled in the mountains of the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas, Taroudant is the starting point for many treks and hikes. The city is known as the "Grandmother of Marrakesh" because it looks like a smaller Marrakesh with its surrounding ramparts. In the sixteenth century, the Saadi dynasty briefly used Taroudant as a capital before it moved its royal seat onwards to Marrakesh.

Taroudant offers an authentic Moroccan experience, far from the typical tourist crowds, providing a more relaxed and immersive encounter with traditional Moroccan culture. It's known for its well-preserved ramparts, vibrant souks, and rich Berber heritage, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the "real Morocco".

Taroudant is full of charming shops and squares. The city is small enough and worth exploring on foot, getting lost in the little alleyways known for its local crafts, including jewellery and carpets. Unlike Marrakesh, almost the entire Taroudant city is inside its walls.

Taroudant is situated 40-50 minutes away by motorway from the international Agadir airport. The international Agadir airport has direct flights from Brussels, Geneva, London, Madrid and Paris by EasyJet, Ryanair and Royal Air Maroc.

So Worth It

The adventure is worth every moment. House is more beautiful than the pictures can show. The staff is first class. Skip Marrakesh, fly into Agadir and 1.25 hours you are there. Souk and market are big enough and cuisine in various Riads is more than enough. One caution bring your own wine and beverage as choices in town are very limited. Dan y Renee”

Gorgeous Fondouk - authentic experience

We really enjoyed our experience in Taroudant - it is certainly a very real living city and was great to be a part of it. Amazing souk as well right across from the villa, being in the heart of the medina was perfect. The Villa itself is gorgeous, full of character with beautiful local ceramics, artifacts, etc. It is very well maintained by Hassan and Fatima, who are fantastic. They went above and beyond to make sure we were well taken care of and comfortable. Fatimas cooking was exceptional. In short we had a great stay, we did some hikes in the lower Atlas Mountains which were beautiful and had a great time. Philippe was very helpful with pre arrival communication and making introductions to people to help with activities in the area. A great spot - assuming you don't speak Berber it is definitely helpful to know French or Arabic as very few people in the area speak English. ”
