A London Landmark: The Water Tower, Woolwich

Step through the gates of the walled garden, cross the stone moat, and enter your own private kingdom. This truly unique three-bedroom freehold home blends historic Victorian grandeur with striking contemporary design — a rare architectural gem tucked away in leafy Woolwich.

Spanning two connected buildings — the original 19th-century Water Tower, with its 12-inch-thick walls, and the sleek, design-led Pavilion — the property offers over 3,000 sq ft of space and character across multiple floors, joined by an internal bridge. Interiors are finished to an exceptional standard, including Philippe Starck-designed bathrooms. The home also features two kitchens and two bathrooms, along with two separate living areas offering flexibility for guests or multi-generational stays.

Among its many highlights is a rooftop cocktail lounge with 360° views over London — the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the City with a martini in hand. Downstairs, a landscaped garden sets the scene for al fresco dining on warm evenings, while the spacious reception room in the Pavilion offers an equally inviting space to unwind. The property enjoys a peaceful setting on Woolwich Common, just a short distance from the Elizabeth Line for easy access into central London.

Romantic, architecturally striking, and rich with character, the Water Tower has featured in numerous British newspapers, as well as the U.S. House Hunters International (London episode) and the UK's Restoration Man. This isn't just a place to stay — it's a piece of London history, reimagined for modern living.

Nearby attractions include Royal Greenwich, Eltham Palace, ancient woodland Oxleas Woods, multiple restaurants in Blackheath village and walk-to grocery store and bus routes.

A Unique Experience

The time we spent at the London Water Tower was a beautiful experience. From the fresh flowers waiting for us to having Tracey welcome us and explain the history and how to best enjoy the property, we felt at home. This was a unique experience with the juxtaposition of history and modern, the added bonus of the amazing views was worth the trip. Thanks again Catherine!!”

A Restoration in Need of Restoration

This well conceived modernist renovation shows that the developer had the best of intentions. The actual execution of the plan is useful, interesting and beautiful. I’m certain that the fittings, finishing and furnishings were state-of-the-art when first installed, but ravages of time, excessive use and questionable management have been hard on this place. A deep, deep, deep, cleaning is needed inside and out! We had to wash just about everything before use. Stained fabrics, dirt and greasy smudges were everywhere. We tried to clean up but found that the cleaning products and solvents had been diluted so much with water that they were rendered nearly useless. We ended up buying our own supplies and starting fresh. It seems that a shifting real estate market has stranded the London Water Tower in a fringe neighborhood – Not quite here, nor there. One the exterior, the lovely water feature seen sparkling in the promo photos was actually a murky green moat supporting an entire civilization of mosquitoes. We skimmed it and added our own chlorine for hygiene. In the end, little of this detracts from that fact that the London Water Tower is an exciting place to spend some time gawking at the outrageous views across greater London. On a clear day you literally can see forever. But, not unlike a waning nightclub in daylight, you can also see a decade of deferred maintenance in each and every square inch of this place. ”
