This is a ThirdHome tailored private journey (ideal for 2-8 people) and not a commercial group tour. Our customized journeys allow members to set their own travel dates and include their individual personal interests along with specific excursions, dining and regional opportunities that they may wish to experience for the perfectly-personal journey experience. Experience 4 nights/5 days of full immersion into the Bordelaise life on this self-drive journey, delighting in the Merlot grapes while visiting chateaus and their gorgeous vineyard estates to sip fabulous wines; escape into historic Saint-Emilion and Pomerol known around the world for its fantastic red wines and medieval architecture; explore and linger within a picturesque setting in the heart of the Dordogne region completed by its River Valley that still exudes an off-the-beaten-path old world charm; enjoy a wine cellar tasting plus a truffle farm excursion making this a quintessential French wine route experience!
SIPPING THE BORDEAUX & DORDOGNE Journey Itinerary in brief:
DAY 1: ARRIVAL INTO BORDEAUX
Upon arrival in Bordeaux (via rail journey from another city/region or by rental car of your choice), check into the lovely Burdigala Hotel. Afternoon is free to explore the city and relax. Evening free to enjoy any of the highly recommended local restaurants.
DAY 2: BORDEAUX
After having breakfast at the hotel, embark on your guided tour. Journey to the scenic Médoc appellation, visiting three Cru Classé Châteaus. Afterwards, enjoy an early evening expertly tutored tasting session of three Bordeaux wines from the Médoc, St. Émilion and Graves regions, including a platter of various artisan cheeses and locally sourced cured meats. Return to your hotel for dinner as you wish and overnight. (Breakfast included this day)
DAY 3: BORDEAUX
After having breakfast at the hotel, begin a full-day guided excursion. Journey to the beautiful regions of St. Émilion and Pomerol, visiting two Classified Châteaus and the UNESCO village of St. Émilion. Enjoy a guided walk through the historic village exploring and sightseeing. Return to the hotel late afternoon with evening at leisure. (Breakfast included this day)
DAY 4: DEPART BORDEAUX TO DORDOGNE
After breakfast at the hotel, continue your self-driving journey to Dordogne. The drive from Bordeaux to Dordogne should take about 2.5 hours. Along the way, if time permits, stop at the historic town of Périgueux and visit the Gallo-Roman Museum, which showcases the remains of a large Roman villa as it’s being excavated. Périgueux is full of medieval streets and 400-year-old houses, and is worth exploring on foot. Be sure to see St. Front Cathedral, built on a Greek cross plan a la St. Mark’s in Venice. This church was the model for Sacré Coeur in Paris. Take in a wonderful lunch in town before continuing onward towards Sarlat. Your hotel is located in Meyrals, La Ferme Lamy, which sits in a park-like setting just 7 miles from the main town of Sarlat. Tonight enjoy dinner at the hotel. (Breakfast and Dinner included)
DAY 5: EXPLORING DORDOGNE
After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a visit to a regional winery and vineyard with tasting. You’ll learn about the history of the wines of this region. Later, visit a truffle farm in Pechalifour, where you will see how truffles are grown and harvested. Here you will also relax with a wonderfully prepared lunch. After lunch, consider exploring the most famous town in the region, Sarlat. This attractive town, with buildings of yellow sandstone, has an interesting Old Town with both medieval and Renaissance buildings. Be sure to see the main square, Place de la Liberté, surrounded by attractive architecture and enjoy dining in any of its many wonderful restaurants. (Breakfast and Lunch included)
DAY 6: DEPART DORDOGNE
After breakfast at the hotel, head back to Bordeaux to return your rental car (OR) perhaps consider extending your journey experience further into another region of France. (Breakfast included)
