Maison Beaufort is a newly renovated 19th century village house surrounded by the vineyards of the famed Minervois wine region in the south of France. This two story home has been beautifully renovated by four Canadian friends who, inspired by a love of the Languedoc countryside, were careful to maintain its original character.
Set on a sunny hillside, Maison Beaufort is both quiet and private. Enjoy the best of country living in a French village setting, the best way to experience France the way the French do. Line up with your neighbors to buy bread in the morning and after dinner walk the same country paths they do. Watch them working in the vineyards and visit them for wine tasting. Shop with them at their local market.
Like a typical village house, the back faces the street while the windows look out onto a sunbathed garden, and a view of the vineyards with the Pyrenees beyond. Most houses in villages in the south of France are attached to each other, a great feature when the inhabitants needed protection from invading armies or from the heat of the sun. However, Maison Beaufort sits alone on a large property, though, very private but open to the sun - just right for holidays!
The house is only a few feet from a 12th century chateau, a designated heritage site, that dominates Beaufort and ensures that the village will retain its historic character.
The main level offers a kitchen, dining and spacious living area that opens to the garden. Several inspired cooks will be able to work together in the well-equipped kitchen - and meals are often the focus of a French holiday - but it will be harder to decide where to eat! Will it be indoors at the harvest table, outside under the grape arbour, in the garden, or around the pool? Every imaginable cooking utensil has been supplied for the kitchen. The home is visited regularly by the owner of a kitchen shop who makes sure we have everything we need. There are dishes, glasses and cutlery for 12, and plastic glasses for the pool area. The owners love to cook so place settings and serving pieces accommodate all menus.
There is a small library for guests who are welcome to take home books they are reading, and leave books they are finished reading. There are also guide books and maps.
The master bedroom suite is set privately off to one side of the main level, with glass doors to the garden and view, a large bathroom and plenty of storage. The two second floor bedrooms offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside through the tall, elegant windows.
The garden is dotted with fig, apricot, and olive trees, and is a perfect introduction to the Languedoc countryside. The sun shines all day on the south-facing expanse, there is seating in inviting corners, herb gardens and the pool to laze about.
Neighbors aren't often seen from this private retreat. The view is toward the vineyards, surrounding villages and the white-capped Pyrenees in the distance. In fact, such a large, sunny garden with a wonderful view is what makes Maison Beaufort unique among French village houses.
Beaufort, a tiny village of just 161 inhabitants, is the proud home of an award winning winery and one of the most popular restaurants in the Minervois. The 12th Century chateau that gives the village its name, its character and its heritage designation is a magnificent structure that dominates the landscape for miles.
Walking through the narrow, twisting village streets is a delightful experience on its own. Like the surrounding villages, Beaufort offers its own version of ochre colored stone houses clustered tightly together around tiny squares and winding streets. Also like most villages in the region it has a church, a winery and a good restaurant. Visitors enjoy frequenting the weekly outdoor markets in neighboring towns and villages.

Beaufort was wonderful
The small town, the old house, the warm pool and nearby villages shops and vineyards made our stay truly relaxing and accommodating. The set up is ideal for two couples or a family with a couple of young kids. There are no TVs at the house so don't expect to watch football or news. There are a limited but adequate number of good restaurants in the area 1-2 per small village. Olenzac has a big style supermarket and street markets set up on various days in various villages. We didn't cook at home but the house was equipped with all you need to do so. All in all we very much enjoyed our stay and would return given the chance. ”
