* DAY OF THE DEAD FESTIVAL - LA CALACA FESTIVAL
It is said in Mexico that October 31st is when the veil between life and death is at its most permeable, and the dead return to Earth for one last visit. This is far from American Halloween, this is Dia de los Muertos, a celebration of the duality between life and death, and also a remembrance of lost loved ones and ancestors. The Day of the Dead was being celebrated by Aztecs 3,000 years before the landing of Cortez, and is still being celebrated today. The more recent La Calaca Festival, started in 2012, is San Miguel’s take on the ancient holiday. The festival’s name translates roughly to The Festival of the Skeletons. This macabre 5-day festival may seem morbid to outsiders, but for Mexico it’s a celebration of life and a mockery of death. This taunting is well illustrated in Mexico’s female characterization of Death named La Calavera Catrina, who dons a foppish wide brimmed hat and a smirk that only a skeleton could make. San Miguel’s residents and foreigners from around the world dress up as Catrinas and Catrines as they parade through town sharing tequila and bread with the symbolic dead. San Miguel’s thriving art scene makes a huge contribution to the uniqueness of La Calaca Festival. Local artisans cover almost every square inch of San Miguel in an explosion of color. Between the art, the music, speaking engagements, workshops, and tours La Calaca is one of the most unique and memorable festivals in the world. Unlike other cultural festivals, Dia de los Muertos is open to locals and foreigners alike. Dress like the dead, celebrate with the living, and experience a stay in San Miguel like no other.
* OPTIONAL: Choose Your Local Experiences -

We highly recommend starting with getting acquainted with the beautiful, colonial city on a short walking tour of the historical center, an art walk through the studios of local artists, lunch in the countryside with Spanish guitar concert, cooking class with tour of local market, private salsa dancing class at the house, wine pairing lunch at local, award winning vineyard, hacienda lunch, home and garden tour, day trip to the lovely local city of Guanajuato.
