Idlewild on the Eastern Shore
Idlewild a Chesapeake Retreat
Idlewild is the perfect place to gather and rest. Situated on twenty acres of gracious waterfront, surrounded by woods and fields, the property provides a unique view into the natural design and wildlife diversity of the Chesapeake Bay’s fabled Eastern Shore.
This shoreline is home to the osprey, bald eagle, blue crab, and mighty oyster; the buffered waterways attract wildlife in all seasons – shore birds, song birds, eagles and the great heron. The pool and patio are conveniently situated to enjoy the natural splendor.
The home looks at the water and seamlessly integrates modern comforts with historic character, being fully updated with contemporary amenities. The kitchen is equipped for yourself or a guest chef, and includes outdoor charcoal and gas grills. Fresh harvested oysters and crabs can be purchased down the road at P.J. Hambleton’s or gathered straight from the Idlewild shoreline.
The bedrooms are appointed with new bedding and the bathrooms all have walk-in showers, and one master bath adds a vintage soaking tub. The first floor bedroom provides a main-level option with privacy, and two second-floor rear bedrooms with pairs of twin beds are perfect for the younger ones. A bed and bath floorplan is available to help you plan.
A substantial dock fits most boats (MLW ~5’), with swim platform, and crabbing cages. Motorboats, sailboats, kayaks, paddle boards, etc. are for rental in St. Michaels town.
St. Michaels offers several excellent dining options. (Recommendations are provided.) In town, the Inn at Perry Cabin is a world-class hotel, offering spa treatments, Har-Tru tennis courts, golf, yacht charters, plus outstanding food and drink. In addition to dining, the town has a lovely neighborhood walking area, local shopping, plus a brewery, winery, and distillery.
Choose a chair and bask in the sunshine; explore the woods, bike the back roads, dive into the pool; go crabbing, fishing and kayaking; play ping-pong, darts, and music in the reclaimed loft; and gather under the stars at the elevated outdoor deck. Even so, find yourself in natural serenity at Idlewild’s Chesapeake retreat beside St. Michaels on the Eastern Shore.

This is the second time my husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Idlewild. It never disappoints! Brad, the owner and Tim, the caretaker, are available for any questions about the property or the surrounding area. Always making sure the the property is satisfactory and our stay is pleasant. From the spacious historic home to the beautiful scenery you can't go wrong with this property. Choose from the brick patio with the majestic oaks, or the dock with the fabulous water views, or the pool with a water view. All were our happy place..... Thank you for another wonderful, relaxing trip!”
Perfection in a box. Nothing overlooked or forgotten where comfort and courtesy are concerned. Beautifully renovated historic home in an exquisite setting. Extremely accommodating and detail oriented hosts who make travelling to and staying in someone else’s home seem like a piece of cake. Lots of amenities/activities and fun things to do in the area for all. Highly recommended!”

My wife Nancy and I cannot recommend Idlewild highly enough. Our stay was during the complicated Covid-19 lockdown period, and as a result many of the restaurants were forced to realign their seating arrangements and put social distancing guidelines in place. Regardless, St. Michael’s was charming and the perfect sized town to explore and get to know. We had our son, daughter-in-law and infant grandson join us and the lovely home worked beautifully. The den, living room and porch spaces are elegant with just the right touch of informality. The kitchen was spacious with great working areas. Each outdoor space is a gorgeous setting, including the terrace dining, the pool and the dock. The grounds are stunning and there are several magnificent trees on the property, including the most spectacular magnolia that we have ever seen. Brad and Bekah Palmer communicated conscientiously with us prior to and during our visit and they took the initiative to give the property a thorough cleansing before our arrival to ensure that it was totally devoid of Coronavirus concerns. They were terrific hosts and their “can do” attitude was evident in every element of Idlewild’s operation. We couldn’t recommend their home more highly.”
