The world's northernmost capital, Reykjavik (which means "smoky bay") sits on the southwest coast of Iceland.
Surrounded by a ring of mountains and Faxafloi Bay, Reykjavik is immaculately clean, and visitors will find that it's easy to explore on foot.
The capital city is full of artists, writers, musicians and filmmakers, as well the rugged fishermen who ply the North Atlantic Ocean and unload their catch on the city's docks.
The highlights of Reykjavik can be seen in two days, but we recommend staying longer, if time permits. And be sure to take the time to talk with the city's residents; they're very friendly.
The two main areas of Reykjavik encompass the harbor and the small pond. The harbor, teeming with boats and fishermen, provides a pleasant stroll and a glimpse into the life of a fishing nation. Stop in for afternoon tea at the Hotel Borg, just across from the City Hall, and you may spot local lawmakers or even the president.
The Cottage is located in the most sought after area of Reykjavik, next to Laugardalur Valley which is the primary recreational area for the city. We love Laugar spa, swimming pool, jogging trails and the family park that is literally across the street. It's also just a short drive (5 min), or walk (about 20 min) from downtown.
This self catering home is perfect for a family or two couples. Fully stocked Chef's kitchen has everything you may possibly need. Our home is casual and comfortable and pretty old so the bedrooms are small. Our caretaker will help you upon request. She can shop for groceries before your arrival. We are also happy to share our favorite restaurants and activities.

This home is warm, inviting, comfortable and well cared for. There was a lovely vase of pink roses, along with some fruit and food left as a welcome gift. It was such a nice gesture. The house is an easy walk to the downtown core of Reykjavik. There's so much to do and see in Iceland, you will need at least a week. We unfortunately did not see the Northern Lights, but we did have a chance to see the beautiful waterfalls, black sand beach, and glaciers. Be prepared for any weather while you're here as it can change in an instant. Opt for layers of clothing and rain gear. After day long tours, we were happy to rest in such a beautiful home. Thank you to Olof and family for your generosity and sharing your home. I hope to go back someday soon, as Iceland has touched my heart. ”
Amazing adventure at the perfect cottage
Thank you Olof for sharing your wonderful cottage. Your home had EVERYTHING we could possible need and the location for all our wonderful adventures was the perfect focal point. This is a gem of a place and we took advantage of all the country had to offer....cannot miss helicopter ride of golden circle, blue lagoon, (although there are some fabulous pools right next to the house), Icelandic horses everywhere and the highlight....Diamond Beach where the glacier meets the ocean - spectacular!!! I hope to return!!!!”
Fantastic House and Location
We loved the Nordic Cottage. It was extremely comfortable and beautifully decorated. The food that was left for our arrival and helpful hints for the area made the home very inviting, like home. The location was great for walking, touring the country, and getting a feel for the people there. Everyone there is so helpful and pleasant. We took home wonderful memories of the people, the Cottage, the city, and the country. Thanks Olof.”
Fantastic Stay !
We loved staying in this home and loved Iceland! The house is well-located in a quiet area of Reykjavik but within a 5-10 min. drive of downtown and surrounding areas. It is well-cared for, decorated, and equipped - the pictures don't fully capture how nice this home is. The hosts were also wonderful -- they accepted our Request a Week, accommodated early arrival, gave us many helpful hints and even provided us with some fresh fruit and basics in the fridge when we arrived. This was our first trip to Iceland and we thoroughly enjoyed it -- beautiful place and very friendly people. We really enjoyed our visit. Thanks so much!! Jack Sperber ”
Just Stunning ...
We have just returned from the most wonderful family holiday in Iceland. Nordic Cottage is a gorgeous house with everything that you could possibly need and provided the perfect base for our stay. It is a much loved family home decorated with exquisite taste set in a residential area right next to a park with a swimming pool and botanical gardens. Reykjavik is a 5 minute drive or close enough to walk to along the sea shore - my 16 year old son ran there in the morning to buy the best bread we have ever tasted at Braud bakery. We saw whales, dolphins and porpoise, toured The Golden Circle, had a long day exploring the stunning Snaefellsnes peninsular and of course visited the Blue Lagoon. Olaf was very helpful, accommodating and his restaurant recommendations were spot on. We had a great time and have all agreed that we'd love to go back in the winter. ”
Nordic Cottage - Reykjavik
Beautiful home in a prime location made for an amazing stay in Reykjavik. Spacious, with everything you need right there. Owner was also very friendly and accommodating. Couldn't have asked for a better place to stay and didn't want to leave!”
We loved this home. Olof was so helpful. The house is beautiful, conveniently located, very warm and inviting. We took day tours by Discover Iceland which were wonderful. All the restaurants that Olof recommended were delicious. Thank you for a great vacation.”
The decor and location of the house are perfect - easy walk into town. I definitely want to come back again - for the house and the wonderful people in Iceland. ”
Nordic cottage is wonderful
We had a terrific week at this wonderful home. The house was beautifully decorated and very comfortable as well as superbly located across from a fabulous park with pool, mineral bath and botanical gardens with a cafe. Olof could not have been a more kind or thoughtful host. Thanks to 3RD Home for making this all possible!”
We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful home. The location across from the beautiful park with the fabulous pools and mineral bath could not have been more perfect. The bistro in the green9house in the lovely botanical gardens was a delightful place to have coffee. We took the public buses everywhere as well as the day tours out to the countryside. There were so many cultural activities in the city that we could have kept busy for another week. Olof was a very kind and thoughtful host who anticipated our every need. Thanks to both Olof and 3rd Home for making this experience possible.”
My sister, Maritza Major, and her husband, John Frankfurt stayed in your home, which they loved. They did not get the place through an auction. It was my gift to them, since they wanted to see Iceland. They enjoyed their trip immensely. Thank you.”
Beautiful house in an incredible country
I wasn't at all sure about going to a cold country on holiday but my daughter and her friends were very keen so off we went. Since then I am recommending it to everybody I meet! What an extraordinary place. We had great days out to geysers, waterfalls, volcanoes, Blue Lagoon (of course - with three 15 year old girls that had to happen), Reykjavik museums and the Northern Lights even came out for a show on the last night. The house is spacious and elegant, the layout worked perfectly for us with several spaces so the teenagers could do their exam revision or check their hones without prying adult eyes. The kitchen is excellent - everything worked and everything was easy to use. And the house was beautifully warm with lashings of hot water so we didn't mind coming in from the snow. Everybody should go to Iceland once in their life.”
Beautiful home, spectacular location
My children and I spent a week in Iceland, we had the pleasure of staying at the comfortable, lovely Nordic Cottage. We were out sightseeing all day most days and returning to this home was a pleasure. Besides being walkable to downtown Reykjavik, it is a very short walk to a local sporting facility with a pool, hot pools, a slide which my children were thrilled about. The owners were accommodating and helpful as we planned our trip, and the property manager was nearby to show us around and answer any questions. I can't imagine a better home for our visit. ”
Amazing week in Iceland
i just returned from a fabulous week at Olof's house. The home is a charming, comfortable, recently renovated house in a nice suburb 5-10 minutes from downtown. (About a $15-17 taxi ride). If you prefer, there's a local bus stop about 5 minutes away and bicycles to use as well. Within a 5-10 walk are several good restaurants and both the Grand Hotel and the Hilton Nordica which make for great pickup/drop off spots for any tours as well as all the tourist brochures you want. I ended up walking to the Grand whenever I needed a taxi or even to ask questions - very convenient. When walking over there be sure to take the route through the sculpture museum gardens-a shortcut plus a bunch of fun sculptures. And there's no worries about walking at night- streets are well lit and it's a super safe neighbourhood (like all of Iceland). Olof has a relative of hers staying in the completely separate garden level apartment below the house who was able to meet me when I arrived, walk me through the house and get me settled. There's also a very thorough information sheet that you'll get beforehand which details all you need to know. Since this was was my first trip to Iceland, all of this made it incredibly easy to enjoy the week with minimal worry and maximum enjoyment. ”
