Voysey, Birchwood is an exquisite and welcoming home with captivating architectural lines and details, and surrounded by expansive patios, gardens, walkways and trails along the river, a serene, fifty-foot heated swimming pool and spa, and a world class arboretum. During the growing season enjoy harvesting your own fruits and vegetables from our large vegetable garden and small orchard. During the fall enjoy the arboretum's spectacular colors and warm-up by the fire table on the patio.

Inside Birchwood relax with family and friends and enjoy the spacious formal and informal living and dining areas and six bedrooms, seven wood burning fireplaces, a gourmet kitchen, a butler's pantry, a fabulous, screened porch, a 3500-bottle wine cellar built from historic timbers, and a home gym.

Room sizes are gracious and flow beautifully into one another over hand-scraped oak floors with huge bay windows that capture the stunning, panoramic views and bathe the rooms in natural sunlight. Birchwood is decorated with artwork collected from around the world. Retire for the night in six comfortable and opulent bedrooms. Spacious ground-level queen master suite with fireplace and jacuzzi. Bedroom 2 with a queen, fireplace and shared bath. Bedroom 3 with a queen, oak paneling, fireplace and en suite bath. Bedroom 4 with a queen, fireplace, ensuite bath and jacuzzi. Bedroom 5 with full bed and shared bath. Upper-level apartment with a queen bedroom, bath, large living area, wet bar and private balcony.

Additional amenities include six flat-screen TVs with more than 80 streaming channels and seven zone geothermal heating and cooling.

You may want to check out the Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival in April, the Middleburg Gold Cup horse races the first Sunday in May, the famous Upperville Colt and Horse Show in June, the inspiring Contemporary American Theatre Festival in Shepherdstown during July, the Loudoun County Fair in August, the Bluemont Festival in September or the fine artisans of the Waterford Fair and Loudoun Wine Awards in October.

For active visitors, enjoy cycling, hiking, paddling or rafting along the Potomac River on the 184-mile C&O Canal, or hike the Appalachian Trail. Drive the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway (especially during October) or try some ziplining, fishing, horseback riding, paintball, or golfing.

If you have small children, they'll love the family-friendly farms and animal parks with tons of fun activities. If you have time or inclination for the city, hop on the train to DC at the nearby Victorian train station and enjoy the scenic ride along the Potomac to Union Station. Then explore some of DC's many monuments, museums and restaurants before coming back to your own private oasis.

We'll provide you with an expansive list of itineraries, nearby activities, vineyards and restaurants and we're happy to help you plan your visit.

Restful stay in rural Virginia

We had a great visit to Birchwood Estate outside of Leesburg Virginia. The home and grounds are beautiful and extensive, with lots to see and explore in the area. Our hosts were very friendly and even left a bottle of wine as a welcome gift. Thank you again for the wonderful memories!”

Family Vacation

This property is gorgeous! You feel like you are in a magical story with all the beautiful décor and elegant spaces throughout the home and property. Spending time walking the property, playing in the garden, swinging in the tree, or swimming in the pool will keep you and your family and friends smiling from ear to ear. Our family 4 adults and 4 kids (18months - 8yrs) absolutely enjoyed and will return! The kids loved catching frogs at night and setting around the fire after a day of swimming and chasing each other all around. The adults enjoyed cooking in the gourmet kitchen, bbqing, eating on the patio overlooking the beautiful rolling hills and lush landscape, drinking wine from a local winery by the fireplace and just setting around the home chatting. Not to mention the movie room when it was time to relax. I can go on and on and on..... We absolutely love this property and will return! ”

Highest standards of a Thirdhome member property

We recently had the pleasure of embarking on a memorable vacation in the charming town of Taylorstown, Virginia. Our stay at Birchwood, a delightful home nestled amidst the rolling countryside, met and exceeded our expectations and provided the perfect setting for a relaxing and enjoyable getaway. Our hosts, Rolf and Pat, were very helpful before, during, and after our stay. Rolf's clearly tried-and-true recommendations make for the perfect itinerary. Birchwood is a shining example of the highest standards of a Thirdhome member property. Upon arriving at Birchwood, we were immediately captivated by its picturesque surroundings. The property boasts an arboretum, offering a tranquil setting where we could immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature. The expansive grounds are exceptionally well maintained. One of the highlights of Birchwood was its delightful vegetable garden, with cows visible in the distance, adding a touch of rustic charm to the experience. With many sitting areas both inside and outside the home, we found ample space, whether we were lounging in the cozy living room, enjoying a meal in the spacious dining area, or around the fire pit in the evening. There is of course a well-equipped kitchen and BBQ. Nearby Leesburg proved to be an enchanting destination. From the historic charm of downtown, where we took a short guided tour as we strolled along King Street and explored the storied history of the area, to unique shops and boutiques. The captivating vineyards and wineries, such as Tarara Winery and Stone Tower Winery, among some 80 others, showcased the rich heritage and natural beauty of Virginia wine country. We found many we thoroughly enjoyed. The cabernet franc propagated here stands astutely among even those from Bordeaux. In terms of dining, our taste buds were continually delighted by the array of culinary experiences the nearby areas had to offer. From the farm-to-table delights of Tuscarora Mill to the historic ambiance and delectable cuisine of The Red Fox Inn & Tavern, each meal was a treat for the senses. We highly recommend a stay at Birchwood. Thanks again to Rolf and Pat for including their fine home in the Thirdhome program.”
