Leobo Private Reserve

Leobo Private Reserve is a completely private 20,000 acre estate based in the beautiful malaria-free Waterberg mountains, 3 hours drive north of Johannesburg and home to the award winning ‘Observatory Bush Villa’.

Designed by Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, it is probably the most stunning safari house in Africa not only from an architectural and style perspective but also as a fantastic home for families and small groups.

The Observatory is a remarkable stone and glass house with lustrous copper features, the most outstanding of which is the the huge dome housing a research grads observatory. Tucked under this cones is the two-storey library with an open fireplace.

The house accommodates a maximum of 9 people (6 adults and 3 children), with 2 luxury bedrooms and luxurious bathrooms with baths, showers and massage beds. A triple bunk room leads to a separate guest room for a nanny; this self-contained nursery space has a separate bathroom and kitchenette. All the furnishings have been custom made with local materials by experienced craftsmen from local African communities.

The astounding expanse of the living area allows guests to enjoy the view, sit by the fireplace or dine under an immense hippo-skeleton chandelier; a mezzanine level above provides and entertainment space for TV or games. Outside, the deck with covered veranda leads to a heated infinity pool which blends in beautifully with its natural surroundings.

For a "James Bond in the Bush" experience, take the flight of stairs leading to the sunset deck for a drink where you can soak in the Jacuzzi whilst looking at the stars. All this without the intrusion of strangers and no restricting time schedule.

Owned by an English family as their private home and only recently available on a limited basis to others, the reserve is rented on an exclusive basis only. You don’t share it with any other guests; it’s your playground for the duration of your stay.

Food and beverages are attended to by a renowned gourmet chert and attending butler.

You also have full use of all the toys on the reserve including thermal imaging for night-time game viewing, 4 quad bikes, 2 racing quad bikes, a Polaris cross-country buggy, kayaks, fishing, horses, game drive vehicles and a helicopter that can also pick you up from Pretoria or Johannesburg airports.

We don’t offer timetabled game drives, rigid programs or meals at set times. Of course you can go on game drives whenever you like, day or night – whenever suits you. But Leobo Reserve is for people who want a bit more out of life than a bunch of Kodak shots of the Big Five. You can literally do anything if you like. Just ask.

Spending time there is a real adventure - something which is so hard to find these days.

We’ll give you the opportunity to enjoy a life experience that you’ll be talking about for years to come.

Additional Costs:
Due to the nature and location of Leobo, we offer the lodge on a fully catered basis. The costs for this is $85 (900 Rand) per adult per day and $50 (500 Rand) per child per day. This includes all 3 meals and local beers/wines and daily maid service. We do offer premium beverages, but these are extra and charged separately.

A discretionary tip at the end of your stay in line with the services you have received would be greatly appreciated by the staff.

All of the toys at Leobo are there for you to enjoy at your own risk. Neither we, nor 3RD HOME, take any responsibility whatsoever for any injuries sustained while using any of this equipment. Fuel and target round costs are chargeable as are all outside activities that have to brought in, but you will only be charged for what you have used.

We would highly recommend taking the helicopter from Johannesburg to Leobo. It can stay with you for the duration of your trip and is very useful for game drives and seeing some of the sites that are a little further afield. If you would like to take up this option, this can be arranged for $9,500 (105,000 Rand) for the duration of your stay and includes 7 hours of flying time. Additional hours are charged at $1,400 (15,000 Rand) per hour. The transfer time from Johannesburg to Leobo is 1 hour and the helicopter can seat 5 people with a standard amount of luggage.

Once in a lifetime experience!

Going to Leobo is a once in a lifetime experience. The property is totally amazing, will it be from the size of the “garden” (8000 ha), the animals staying there (zebras, antelopes, giraffes, birds, …), the pool, the views from the terraces, …. Not to mention the house itself where every piece of decoration has been thought over down to the tiniest detail, although the surface of the house itself is huge. Along your stay, each day you keep discovering some more surprises… Along with all this, you stay with a wonderful staff (14 p.!) who is entirely dedicated to give you the most perfect stay you can dream of. The combination of this incredible property and the wonderful staff enables you to enjoy a bunch of amazing activities around the magnificent property (with a ranger most of the time) : walking, quad biking, buggy driving, horse riding, night drive game viewing, shooting, fishing, having lunch in the bush, stars watching… and I think we didn’t do everything, while we did a lot of things every day! We were 2 families of 4 staying together for one week, and I think each of us will remember this dream experience for ever. We all want to deeply and sincerely thank Leobo’s owner for sharing this treasure with 3rd Home members. I don’t really dare calling it an “exchange” as I think nothing can compare to Leobo…”
