Activities of Interest
- TANE MAHUTA God of Waipoua Forest - Less than half-hour away is NZ's tallest mighty kauri tree. A life-transformative experience is to do the Footprints Waipoua twilight tour with local Maori guide.
- RAWENE - Just 15mins away is one of NZ's oldest European villages Rawene, with its historic buildings, Clendon House, and lovely cafes. This is also where the vehicular ferry departs from (as part of the Twin Coast discovery route).
- WAIRERE BOULDERS - 45mins away are these "8th wonder of the world" basalt boulders, with very pleasant 1/2/3 hour walks. Great for families. Also nearby to historic Mangaungu Mission House, where the largest signing of the Treaty occurred.
- BAY OF ISLANDS - Just over an hour away from this west-coast location, is the east-coast's Bay Of Islands, including the beautiful Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Paihia town, and NZ's oldest European settlement of picturesque Russell.
- CAPE REINGA - Full day trip (best done via coach tour from KeriKeri) to NZ's northernmost point Cape Reinga, including driving along Ninety Mile Beach.
- NGA-WHA SPRINGS: These healing geothermal hot-pool waters are about 45-mins away, en route to the Bay of Islands.
- DEEPSEA FISHING - Hopping on a relaxed charter with Hokianga Express, crossing the sand-bar into the Tasman Sea for fantastic fishing.
- WALKING TRAILS - A bunch of nice walks are available in and around the area.

- OPONONI - A minute down the road is the very laid-back little seaside village of Opononi, with its pub, takeaways, cafe and superette.
- OPO PUB (OPONONI TAVERN) - Iconic NZ, with a 'must-do' of chillaxing on their deck with an unhurried cold beer.
- OPO TAKEAWAYS - Ordering an Opo fish burger and chips, is genuine kiwiana wrapped up in newspaper, and best served with a thick-shake.
- OPO WHARF - Handline fishing with the kids doing cannonball dive-bombs into the warm Hokianga waters.
- SURFING THE SAND-DUNES - Hop on the 5-min water-taxi from Opo Wharf with Hokianga Express to enjoying the coolest activity of surfing the sand-dunes (boogie-boards provided).
- MANEA - FOOTPRINTS OF KUPE – 2Mins away is this 90-min multi-sensory tourist experience of Polynesian explorer Kupe crossing the treacherous sand-bar into the Hokianga Harbour, to establish the first Maori Pa village.
- OMAPERE & THE SANDS - 5Mins away is the twin village of Omapere, with its century-old Sands Hotel - a great place to enjoy a wonderful Kerikeri chardonnay on their deck while the kids enjoy a dip in their pool.
- HOKIANGA - BIRTHPLACE OF AOTEAROA! A reminder that the west-coast Hokianga is birthplace of Aoteaora (NZ) where Maori first established. (The east-coast Bay Of Islands is birthplace of the nation of NZ under European colonization.)
