Bariloche is where the dazzling world of Patagonia begins. Entering the village-like town of Bariloche you feel that you have stepped through the gates of a small Swiss hamlet. The town’s location along the southern end of Lake Nahuel Huapi provides for entertainment throughout the entire year. Bariloche’s history dates back to 1902 when the government of Rio Negro officially put aside 400 hectares inside the Nahuel Huapi National Park for the establishment of the village of Bariloche.
Today, nearby Cerro Catedral makes it a destination in the winter, while the lakefront, hiking, and mountain biking attract tourists both internationally and from around Argentina in the summer. Bariloche’s Swiss influence comes from a large Swiss community that has settled in the nearby Colonia Suiza and can be noticed in the architecture of hotels and restaurants. The town center is an enjoyable place to wander through chocolate shops, souvenir and sports stores and internet cafes.
Best Time to go:
Bariloche has become an all-season resort with plenty to do in both the warm summer months as well as the cooler, snow-filled winters. November to April is the fly-fishing season, as well as the best time for summer activities such as mountain biking, hiking, rafting, and kayaking. The fall (April-May) is a lovely time to visit Bariloche for scenery when the trees turn a fiery red and auburn. Winter (July to early September) is when the ski hills are at their best and tourists come from all over South America to hit the slopes.
