Nestled on top of the second deepest part of our vast oceans, at over 6.5 miles deep, the Tonga Trench is created by the convergence zone of the South Pacific’s tectonic plates. This immense, unstoppable force has uplifted sea beds and created volcanic ridges and active hot spots in the Earth’s crust. These primordial events have shaped the spectacular Vava’u island group. In doing so, created a myriad of beautiful, sheltered anchorages sculpted in unique calcium carbonate landscapes. The islands are carved with deep channels which support amazing underwater variety and provide ideal sailing conditions. With water clarity often 150 feet, fabulous diving and snorkeling opportunities abound.

This changeable and diverse area is a meeting point for tectonic plates, animals and mammals of all sorts, and now plays host to TradeWinds’ base in Tonga.

Important Note on Whale Activities: While the humpback whales are in Tonga, TradeWinds guests might see above the water displays from afar, though there are no guarantees of sightings. Abiding by very strict conservation and protection regulations, ALL whale activities must be with licensed operators, including whale watching and swimming. Interacting with whales is NOT possible during the days of your TradeWinds Experience which means all whale activities MUST be scheduled during the days before or after your TradeWinds experience, and our team can suggest a local operator.
