Dating back to the 15th Century, this historical villa has been recently restored and refurbished from top to bottom, in order to become a unique and cozy vacation rental.
Its hilltop position ensures superlative views of Florence and the Tuscan countryside, with the city center just a 10 minute drive away.
The Villa is nestled on top of 5 acres of private land, scattered with olive trees. All around the house is a romantic, terraced garden with ponds and fountains, lemon plants and persimmon trees, strawberry grape vine and delicate flowers.
Inside, you will find elegant yet cosy interiors with 7 bedrooms (4 queens, 1 twin, 2 single) fully and tastefully furnished, to accommodate up to 12 adults.
The villa features two large living rooms, a bright and spacious dining room, frescoes and fireplaces, a warm atmosphere with plenty of comfortable corners for reading, relaxing and entertaining.
The spacious fully-equipped kitchen connects to the rear garden for lovely al-fresco dining.
The tower section consists of an independent yet connected apartment, with its own little kitchenette.
A top-notch heating system is available with separate thermostats, instant unlimited hot water for showers or bathtub soaks, air-conditioning and broadband internet connection.
In addition to the large indoor heated whirlpool (about 80 x 120 inches) guests will also be able to enjoy the new plunge pool we created in one of the garden terraces. Not a standard swimming pool but rather an enjoyable large outdoor jacuzzi-like pool (160 x 150 inches) with a great view of Florence.

Tantafera, a gorgeous villa, historic yet with all modern conveniences and a panoramic view that captures the beauty of Tuscany is a mere 20 minute ride to the heart of Florence! We were a group of 7 women who have traveled the world and this one-of-a-kind property (cared for by a most charming and generous host) was deemed extraordinary by us all. Roberto kindly gave us many excellent referrals including to some local Tuscan chefs, one who prepared a perfect Tuscan dinner on the night of our arrival. Having flown in from a variety of US sites, after our wonderful multicourse wine paired meal, we had choose to unwind in the huge grotto hot tub before each of us retired to one of the 7 ensuite bedrooms. The next morning we were surprised and grateful to see our host had left us a kitchen stocked with breakfast items; soon after we were greeted by his recommended driver (with a comfortable van) who transported us daily into the City. After each fabulous exploration of Florence - the art, the wine tour, the shopping, the architecture, it was a delight to return to Tantafera. Our only disappointment was having to leave. Thank you Roberto, for offering your exceptional property to ThirdHome. ”
Florentine Fantasy Come True
Our two families stayed at the Villa Tantafera in April, 2018. It was a divine experience from beginning to end. The owner recommended a driver who met us at the train station. He was professional, courteous, and extremely reliable. We were four adults and four teenagers. He brought two minivans that drove us out of the city and up into the hills which overlook the magnificent Florence skyline. Once at the villa, we were transported to another time and place -- the kind of surroundings that one would imagine when thinking of Florence during the Renaissance. It was breathtaking. We were greeted by Roberto, the owner, who was gracious, accommodating, and made us feel right at home. He gave us a tour of the villa, which includes modern bathrooms and kitchen, as well as a small garden area. There are stunning, unforgettable views of the city from most of the rooms and the garden. These views are possible due to the fact that the villa sits atop a steep hill. Because of its location, nothing is easily walkable so a rental car or private driver is essential. The villa was both spacious and cozy. There were rooms comfortable for all eight of us to be together for family meals, games, and visits from local friends. There were also areas one could retreat to in order to have some private time. Since most people rely heavily on internet access for local information while traveling (or even working remotely a little), it should be noted that the wifi in the villa was adequate, not blazingly fast. Of course, one doesn't stay in a glorious 400-year-old villa for the wifi, so don't let this discourage you! Our stay at the Villa Tantafera was truly a dream come true. Our children loved it and so did we. It made a Florentine fantasy become a reality for our families. ”
Our group (four couples, one single with 3 year old) stayed in Villa Tantafera in October 2016. Roberto, the owner, met us on arrival and was most gracious, showing us around the property and detailing its history. His English is perfect (he lived in London for several years). The property has been in his family since the 1960s and was extensively renovated four years ago to modernize bathrooms, install a new kitchen, and update infrastructure. The property is an historic "listed" property so there are limits to what can be done to it. It is magnificent, set on a hill overlooking Florence, Brunelleschi's iconic duomo, and the surrounding countryside dotted with superb villas. The home is decorated in old, traditional style, which keeps the villa's "period" look (some people might quibble that the décor needs updating, but this would be petty, in my view). A challenge for some mobility-impaired visitors is that there are uneven surfaces (especially door thresholds) and there are many stairs. My partner and I stayed in the wonderful "Pigeon Loft" at the house's highest point, and it was a hike each time we did it. But we were rewarded by stunning views from the windows. No pain, no gain -- as they say. The other challenge for some may be location: this is a house that is perfect for a group that loves to cook and dine together (the kitchen and dining room are ideally suited to the purpose). Those who want to pop into Florence will be challenged by (1) expensive taxis; (2) a long walk to the bus; or (3) if you have a car, traffic and parking in Florence. If you want to only spend one or two days in Florence and the rest of the time enjoying the villa, Fiesole, or driving around the Tuscan countryside, Tantafera is perfect. More urban-focused guests might find the to-and-fro to Florence a bit of a hassle. We found it perfect for our purposes. One note: I have several properties that I rent, and Roberto graciously provided more food and libations than I have ever encountered in a rental property. This is a generous and gracious property.”
The trip of a lifetime
The entire experience of staying at this 15th century castle overlooking the Duomo and all of Florence was magnificent! Roberto was extremely generous and welcoming. Upon our arrival he opened a bottle of wine, focaccia and cheese and chatted with us about his families history in the home and explained how to navigate Florence. He renovated and restored the villa leaving the impressive old timbers, stone floors and winding passageways, yet modernizing the kitchen and bathrooms adding all of the amenities. There were rain shower heads, double sinks, beautiful tile and instant hot water for showers. He stocked the fridge for us and had fresh flowers in vases everywhere. The grotto/hot tub had old stone walls and gave the impression of being at an ancient roman spa. The villa is located 10-15 minutes from the restaurants and sites, we took a cab in everyday or one can take the bus after a 1/2 mile walk through olive groves and down a narrow busy street. We found having a car to be unnecessary since driving to town and parking was over our heads. We drove to Siena one day and though we loved seeing Siena, the traffic was scary for us and the camera tickets could make the trip expensive if you're not familiar with driving in Italy. We felt it would be best to take a cab or Uber from the airport to the villa and to take a cab or bus in to town daily. Roberto offers a suggestion of a driver if you feel like a visit to Siena or if you want a personal driver. To have the opportunity to live in Villa Tantafera for a week is an experience we will always cherish. ”
