Description

Lying just to the east of Graaff-Reinet in the heart of the malaria free Eastern Cape’s Great Karoo, Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve offers guests the safari experience of a lifetime in a region that is steeped in history and culture. Once homes to generations of settlers, the two magnificent homesteads, Cambedoo Manor and Hillside Manor, have been sensitively converted into havens of five star luxury.

Dating back to the early 1800s, Cambedoo Manor is a fine example of Cape Dutch architecture. Wide Oregon pine floorboards gleam from generations of wear, while thick walls keep the untamed Karoo elements firmly at bay. A generous dining room with oversized fireplace plays host to nights filled with camaraderie and cheer. With 4 luxuriously appointed en-suite bedroom suites, with 2 double bedrooms and 2 twin bedrooms, the property offer guests a truly private experience. The fourth suite, referred to as the honeymoon suite, is situated in Camdeboo Manor’s beautiful gardens, in what was originally the ‘Gate House to the Manor’. And should the call of nature tug at your soul, guests can simply slip out of their private patio doors onto a secluded courtyard and into the lush established garden that stands like an oasis in the desert heat.

Slightly more ‘modern’ than the Cambedoo Manor, Hillside Manor is a mountain retreat set in the foothills of the Sneuberg Mountains. Offering magnificent sweeping valley views, the origins of the 19th century Hillside Manor apparent in the gables, the veranda, and the externals, as well as in its interior, which is dominated by an open plan kitchen, a neo-upcountry style, antique rugs, smart seating and an open fire. Newly renovated, Hillside Manor also consists of a modern living spaces and 3 double en-suite bedrooms, which makes it an ideal family option for your stay in South Africa. Given that the Hillside Manor property is unwalled, it is not uncommon to entertain surprise guests courtesy of Mother Nature!

Activities at Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve include wildlife drives, guided walks, cheetah tracking, sundowners, historical trips and excursions into nearby Graaff Reinet. After a 1 hour and 10 minute drive, guests will find themselves taking in the beauty from the Valley of Desolation, a national monument that consists of sheer cliffs and giant dolomite rocks that drop down to the valley floor 390ft.(120m) below and offer vistas of the nearby historic town of Graaff-Reinet and the plains of the scenic Karoo. Guests wishing to maximise their experience can try the Crag Lizard Trail, or any other hiking trails with a duration ranging from one hour to overnight.

Only 45 minutes away from Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve is Graaff-Reinet, the fourth-oldest town in South Africa, which is steeped in rich Cape Dutch history and is home to more national monuments than any other town in South Africa. Some of the highlights to explore include the Reinet House Museum, the Dutch Reformed Church and Stretch’s Court, a picturesque restored street of Karoo cottages with brightly painted shutters and doors.

Close by Graaff-Reinet, watersports enthusiasts will head to the Nqweba Dam, a fantastic spot that covers a total area of 1000 hectares where guests will have the opportunity of seeing a range of animals from, Kudu, Gemsbok, Springbok, Cape Buffalo, Wildebeest, Eland and Cape Mountain Zebras. Enjoy boating, canoeing, fishing and windsurfing while fishermen stand a chance of catching some fish and let yourself be delighted by a breathtaking sunset alongside the dam!

As part of your stay, guests will have the opportunity to book up to 2 game drives per day (averaging at about 3 hours each - fees apply) at optimal wildlife viewing times, namely: pre-dawn and sunset. Given that the Private Game Reserve is nestled in a valley, the game drives typically start with a breathtaking climb up the mountain slopes and on to the plateau above where the animals graze and the world unfolds at your feet.

The highly knowledgeable and experienced game rangers will try their best to make sure you see our “Camdeboo Big Five”, namely the breeding cheetah pair, the rare white rhinos, giraffe and almost extinct mountain zebra. Not to mention a bevy of birds and smaller lesser-spotted game.

A great stay despite some confusion

A wonderful stay at Camdeboo Manor. The team and the guides were amazing. The food and wine were perfect. The game drives were so unique and different from the traditional drives we have been on at other safari’s in Kruger. The views are tremendous. A different location but well worth the visit. We had some confusion on arrival as the large main villa that we expected to stay in and had reserved, had other guests In it. We were lucky to be a smaller group and were hosted at another lodge in the resort. It was very nice and resolved the little mix up. This is my only reason for not awarding 5 stars.”

Spectacular - a hidden gem of the Karoo!

This property was even more beautiful than expected! The house and the rooms are beautifully furnished and decorated - every little detail has been thought through. The kitchen really is equipped for a chef... it's rare I find a kitchen that has everything I need and with plenty of countertop space and two fridges providing enough space for all the food and drinks for a week. The views from the top of the escarpment when you go on game drive, are absolutely spectacular - literally 360 views... a photographers dream with some of the most interesting and dramatic sunsets I've seen in a while. In addition to the Game Drives, we also went on a game walk with the ranger, which is a great option for the more adventurous. The staff were also a treat - expertly servicing the manor every day, and laying the table for meals, and even setting up the Boma or outdoor dining area when weather permitted. Don't miss out on a visit to the Valley of Desolation and the quaint, beautifully preserved historic town of Graaff Reinet. Dinner or lunch at the Drostdy Hotel is also recommended.”

One of those experiences that will stay with us for ever ....

We had the most wonderful stay at Mount Camdeboo - it is one of those experiences that will stay with us for ever ... the setting, the views, the stargazing, the staff and the most amazing animal encounters both on the game drives and right outside our door with baboons, warthogs, ostrich and nyala coming to say hello on a more or less daily basis. The manor house is large and luxurious with excellent indoor and outdoor space so that we could come together or find our own quiet place ... essential with four boys ranging from 9 to 17! We have been on safari before but to spend a week at Camdeboo with the time to get to know the place and the mix of animals was a different and a more meaningful experience. Dane our ranger took us out everyday - sometimes twice a day - and there was always something new to see. The rhino and cheetah encounters were very special. We opted for Camdeboo to cater for us - which is essential given that the nearest small supermarket is an hours drive away and, although expensive especially by South African standards, this added to our experience : the food was excellent, the staff professional - friendly and non at all intrusive and one of our group who was coeliac was very well looked after. Thank you to everyone at Camdeboo - we just loved our stay ....”
