Château d'Isle-sur-Marne | Featured at The 2023 Met Gala | 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty'

Discover the Champagne region in style and stay in a French 18th-century Château.

Set in the heart of the historic Champagne region and entirely surrounded by water, Château d'Isle-sur-Marne is a stunning, fully restored castle where time stands still. Dating back to 1732, the façades, the dovecote, the iron gate, the roofing, and the statues of the park are all protected as historic monuments and embody the classic style of the symmetrical building.

Having first belonged to a supposed mistress of King Louis XIV, whose daughter Sophie was a close friend of the French writer and philosopher Denis Diderot, a prominent figure during the Enlightenment, who stayed twice at the Château, it became much later the property of German designer Karl Lagerfeld.

Extending over 34 acres (14 hectares) of landscaped parklands and forest and surrounded by water on all sides, the property is accessible by a stone bridge, passing the moats surrounding the Château. All revealing the classic style of the main building, the overhanging cornices, the modillion cornices, the tall windows, and the rusticated masonry of the framing around the openings are all made of freestone.

Guests will be amazed by the multiple views the Château offers; while guests will be able to enjoy the panoramic view of the main courtyard from the front façade, you'll be able to observe the serene park that surrounds the castle from the rear of the main building. Comprising a dovecote and a farm (both remaining empty), the property also provides guests with a swimming pool immersed in the manicured gardens, a BBQ unit for delicious al fresco meals, and sun-loungers waiting for you to recline on!

The entrance door opens into a chandelier that hangs proudly in the double-height vestibule, which features a magnificent stone stairway with its wrought-iron handrail that provides access to all the floors. The main building, which spans two stories above the ground floor, is topped with a slate roof that boasts tall windows.

The contemporary and elegant interiors are adorned with antique furniture, providing guests with an authentic French castle experience. A chance to enjoy a stay in grandeur and style! With a soothing colour palette and the parquet floor throughout the all Château, which blends perfectly with elegance and class, the décor is the backdrop for modern furniture, with vintage and antique objects.

The modern and fully equipped kitchen, featuring two windows looking out over the parklands, is extended by a central island with stools and will be the delight of any demanding chef for an appetising meal to be cooked to end a perfect evening.

Adapted to guests with impaired mobility, the Château features eight bedrooms that sleep up to 16 guests and five bathrooms with luxurious furnishing. Each features a king-size bed for ultimate comfort; you'll be taken by the exquisite beauty of their unique design. As guests at Château d'Isle-sur-Marne, you will also be entertained by the pool table, tennis table, and trampoline!

Featuring covered parking, the Château is the perfect getaway in an area where guests can engage in activities such as hiking, cycling, sailing, and fishing. Venture out your stunning Château and discover all the gems of the region. Spent your days going to the traditional towns in the Champagne region and enjoy walking around the quaint villages full of charm and history.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars are the result of the alchemy that allowed a wine of excellence to emerge, known as the universal symbol of celebration: the Champagne! Take a discovery tour of the Moët & Chandon cellars and escape to the garden, including a visit to the Orangerie's private garden and a tasting of the prestigious bubbly beverage!

While Epernay is the town with the famous 'Champagne Avenue' (Avenue de Champagne), a beautiful street lined with some of the most famous champagne brands, Reims is the largest city in the region. One of the must-see destinations in the Champagne region, Reims combines the culture of a big city with the charm of a smaller town. The inspiring architecture and rich heritage have earned Reims a place on France's list of "Villes d'Art et d'Histoire" (Cities of Art and History). The city has four Michelin-starred dining rooms and three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, among which are the Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral, the Palais du Tau, and the oldest church in the city, the Saint-Rémi Basilica.

A magnificent Chateau on the doorstep of Champagne

Chateau Isle-sur-Marne is a magnificent estate and is a great place for a group of friends or families. The owner (Martine) and host (Stella) were extremely helpful. We really enjoyed a week in this special estate.”

Magnificent chateau out of a fairy tale story

This almost 300 year old château was magnificent. We had a group of 4 couples, each who had their own en suite bathroom. There are two additional bathrooms to use in the common areas downstairs. Since some of the en suite bathrooms are jack and jill style bathrooms, one could utilize additional bedrooms available if needed. While we were there during a very cold week (it snowed for a few minutes when we arrived), the grounds were still breathtaking and well maintained, and the home stayed warm enough with 3 roaring fireplaces downstairs with plenty of wood available, and heaters in the bedrooms and bathrooms, and main rooms. All rooms are quite spacious yet have understated and modest, but tasteful, furnishings. Some of the rooms such as the main salon (living room), and two dining rooms, looked and felt very regal with their high ceilings and incredible paneled molding, similar to rooms one might find in a palace. The home has an office and Tv room, as well as French pool table room and bar area. The kitchen was quite large and had an enormous island that we could utilize to set up a buffet each morning, as well as enjoyed a cooking class from a local gourmet chef. This chef also brought us breakfast several mornings which was a feast for about double the persons we had. Him and his wife also prepared and served a special dinner with wine pairings from the region. The outdoor setting and grounds were my favorite, and are incredibly picturesque and peaceful. They actually look even more fairytale like and beautiful in person. I loved sitting in the salon and looking out to the backyard and beyond each day. When the weather was nice, we could walk down to a small creek that took us down a path to a pond with several swans (offsite). When the day was clear, we could look to the west towards the old town church, hear the church bells, and enjoy the sunset in the background. Looking out towards the driveway from the home was also a field of solid yellow mustard grass that looked like a scene from a painting. Due to the cold weather, we were unable to enjoy the pool or dining outside as we would have normally done, although this would be quite lovely if you are fortunate to stay during a warmer week. The home felt very safe, despite being a bit remote and very old. We loved the moat that surrounded it which only added to the ambiance. Because the home is very old, we had to be and were understanding of some of the slight inconveniences that come with a home so s old that has original doors, hardware, etc. Martine, the owner, was as gracious and responsive as they come, and also quite helpful in making reservations during our stay for restaurants or providing travel tips. She also had some nice recommendations for places to visit or eat at, we enjoyed strolling in the charming towns such as Nancy and Troyes. We also enjoyed two days of champagne house tours. While this chateau sits in a very small town, and seemed so remote, there were thankfully still ample markets and restaurants not too far away, as well as larger towns only 20 minutes away. All the roads in this region were remarkably well paved, although at night, many of the roads in the area are not lit at all. Fortunately, it stayed light until later in the evening, and we were thankful that we could access google maps which helped tremendously. All in all, we had a lovely time and appreciate having the unique experience of staying in such a historic chateau that felt like being in a fairy tale. ”
