Description

Casa Las Nubes

Perched high in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta at approximately 1,900 meters above sea level, this remote mountain retreat offers an experience that is as rewarding as it is unique. Surrounded by misty peaks, lush forest, and dramatic views, the home is designed for travelers seeking a true escape, one that trades convenience for immersion, and routine for adventure. The property is enveloped in impressive tropical landscaping, where native plants, flowering greenery, and dense foliage create a vibrant, living backdrop that blends seamlessly with the surrounding mountain environment.

The property sits deep in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where the climate is notably cooler and mistier than the coast below. Days can be warm to crisp and evenings often turn chilly, creating the perfect setting for fireside nights. Heating is provided by fireplaces in the main living area and the primary bedroom, and guests should be comfortable lighting and maintaining fires using firewood (available locally for purchase). For many, this ritual becomes a highlight of the stay, but it’s an important consideration for those accustomed to central heating.

The home itself blends rustic character with thoughtful design, featuring open living spaces, natural wood elements, and three inviting bedrooms that open to the surrounding landscape. Outdoors, the tropical gardens frame every view, with layered greenery and flowering plants enhancing the sense of seclusion. Mesh lounging areas provide peaceful spots for sunset watching, quiet reflection, and stargazing beneath clear mountain skies.

This is a remote, nature-forward property, and with that comes a more hands-on experience. The steps leading up to the home are steep, and guests should be comfortable with uneven terrain. Being immersed in nature also means the presence of insects and forest debris; daily sweeping is part of life here, much like tending a fire or opening the home to fresh mountain air.

For those who embrace its rhythm, this retreat offers something rare: a chance to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience the Sierra Nevada in a way few ever do. It’s not a typical vacation, but it’s an unforgettable and deeply special one.

Please note: Power interruptions can occur, and systems such as the propane-powered hot water heater may occasionally need to be reset. Laundry facilities are available upon request and require propane to operate. Advance planning is essential. Groceries and drinking water should be stocked ahead of arrival. Assistance with logistics and provisioning can be arranged.

Nature’s Glory! Birdwatching and Sunsets!

We had a lovely stay in this peaceful home in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It’s a special place to slow down, connect with nature, and enjoy the sunsets and misty mountain views. The birdwatching is exceptional, with constant activity around the house, making it a true haven for nature lovers. We spent our days walking near the house, relaxing on the porch, and enjoying the sounds of the surrounding forest, and our evenings cooking together and gathering around the fireplace. A few helpful notes for future guests: the home is quite remote, with a bumpy, winding mountain road—having a driver worked well for us. The stone staircase leading up to the house is steep and may not be suitable for everyone. We stocked up on groceries in Santa Marta before arriving, which is important since it’s not easy to get supplies once there. Although the listing references Santa Marta, the higher elevation means a cooler climate, and while there is no central heating, the fireplace provides warmth in the main living area. Yeison, who helps with the house, was wonderful, and we enjoyed having a cook and cleaning help for a couple of days. Being off the grid in such a beautiful natural setting was part of the experience, and we truly enjoyed our stay.”
