Description

ANTIGUA RETREAT

Cobblestone streets lined with brightly coloured colonial buildings, a jacaranda-wreathed central plaza, 16th-century ruins and with volcanoes surrounding it. Few cities in Latin America can match Antigua Guatemala (usually referred to as just Antigua) for postcard prettiness. But this Unesco-listed city is about much more than surface-level charm and Instagram opportunities.

This quaint two bedroom property offers mountain views and is located about 10 km from Hobbitenango. The property is 2km from the Santa Catalina Arch and features a garden and free private parking.

The house features two comfortable bedrooms, a flat-screen cable TV, a large terrace, a dining area and a kitchen with a microwave and a fridge.

Cerro de la Cruz is 3.8km from the accommodation.

Thousands of visitors descend on Antigua for its famous Semana Santa celebrations over Easter, but this colonial gem is worth a visit at any time of year.

Activities of Interest

  • Arts
  • Equestrian
  • Hike
  • Art at Santo Domingo Del Cerro - This (free) sculpture park dedicated to the work of Efraín Recinos, the so-called “Guatemalan Picasso” is one of the best places to see contemporary art in the city.
  • Learn to salsa - Antigua is among the best places in Central America to learn salsa and the city’s undisputed dancing queen is Nancy Gudiel, who runs the New Sensation dance studio.
  • Shop for textiles and handicrafts - Local women in their embroidered huipiles (blouses) are walking advertisements for Guatemala’s textile heritage.
  • Caoba Farms - Just 15 minutes from Antigua is Caoba Farms, an organic farm with a café serving up mouthwatering local Guatemalan fare, often with live music.

Places of Interest

  • Cerro De La Cruz (20 mins) - This quaint city was rebuilt after the earthquakes of the 18th century on a grid pattern inspired by the Italian Renaissance.
  • El Arco de Santa Catalina (5 mins) - Its arabesque-patterned stucco is evidence of the Moorish design trend in Spain at the time. The attached former monastery is also worth a look.
  • Parque Central (10 mins) - Buzzing with activity, and bordered by cathedrals, fountains, trees and colonial buildings, the plaza is the best place to get a feel for the town.
  • Church of San Francisco (15 mins) - Its spectacular colonial architecture, grand courtyard and ruined monastery make it an incredibly photogenic place to visit.

Beautiful Apartment - Great Location

We stayed in this beautiful 2 bed 2 bath apartment in Antigua in August and absolutely loved it. It is located about 10 minutes outside of the main square and is super accessible walking or taking a 2 dollar uber to anywhere you want to go! It is in a part of the town that is more local but super awesome to explore with yummy street food on the corner almost every night! The patio had a great view of the volcanos! The kitchen was well stocked with spices and olive oil which made it easy to cook a few things when we needed! I would highly recommend a stay here and our group will definitely be returning! ”
