Description

A Japanese-Inspired Hill Country Sanctuary

Set on ten private acres among junipers and oaks in the Texas Hill Country, this rare design-forward compound offers a tranquil retreat rooted in the Japanese philosophy of yutori, the practice of slowing down, living in harmony with nature, and creating space for reflection and stillness. Thoughtfully composed as a multi-structure sanctuary, the property provides both togetherness and privacy, making it ideal for families, creative retreats, or small groups seeking a meaningful escape just outside Austin.

The compound includes four distinct structures: a minka-modern main residence, a matching guest house, an original log cabin, and a barn. The separation between buildings allows guests to enjoy shared experiences while still retreating to their own private spaces. Tucked toward the back of the acreage, the modern residences feel intentionally removed from the world, surrounded by native landscape and quiet Hill Country beauty.

Designed and crafted by Nolan Bell Studios, the minka-modern homes blend contemporary architecture with traditional Japanese influences. Exteriors feature shou sugi ban, an ancient Japanese wood-charring technique chosen for its durability and resistance to weather, insects, and rot. Inside, custom white oak cabinetry, millwork, paneling, and wardrobes create a cohesive, warm interior palette that feels both refined and grounded.

The chef’s kitchen is equipped with Bosch appliances and paneled Fisher & Paykel refrigeration and dishwasher for a seamless, minimalist aesthetic. Ultra-premium natural stone surfaces, like breccia marble, limestone, soapstone, and granite, are used throughout the homes, complemented by luxury French white oak flooring. Bathrooms are elevated with fabricated stone trough sinks, designer lighting, curated tile selections, and polished nickel Newport Brass and Riobel fixtures. Commercial-grade windows and doors provide durability and clean sightlines, while solid-core interior doors enhance privacy and sound control.

Beyond the architecture, the property’s true luxury lies in its sense of calm and intentional living. Whether gathering across the compound or enjoying solitude beneath the oaks, the setting invites guests to slow their pace and reconnect with nature. Designed as both a retreat and a functional short-term rental compound, this Driftwood sanctuary offers a rare balance of architectural significance, privacy, and restorative Hill Country serenity.
