The estuary & beach provides for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding and small craft exploration, and the setting encourages an unhurried pace shaped by tides and light. Cooks Beach has a small local shopping centre with a general store, restaurants & cafes, takeaway & a liquor store. A short drive away the frequently run passenger ferry service quickly connects Cooks Beach at Ferry Landing to the larger coastal town of Whitianga. There are plenty of coastal walking tracks around Cooks Beach, such as Shakespeare Point, Lonely Bay, Whitianga Coastal walk.
A golf courses & tennis courts are nearby.
Further afield is Hot Water Beach, Hahei, Cathedral Cove & Whitianga are popular places to visit as well as local arts & craft shops & wineries
