A 19th-Century Faroese House with Ocean Views in Sandavágur

2-6 Keys3 Bedrooms6 Guests2 BathsView Amenities

Description

Three bedrooms and two bathrooms unfold within one of Sandavágur’s oldest surviving houses, originally built in the early nineteenth century and carefully restored to preserve its traditional Faroese character. Positioned along the fjord on the island of Vágar, the house sits within a small coastal village where turf roofs, timber facades, and open sea views shape the landscape. From the windows, the fjord stretches toward the Atlantic while seabirds move across the water and the changing Faroese light shifts across the hillsides throughout the day.

The interior maintains the proportions and materials of the original structure while introducing modern comfort. On the main floor, the living room forms the heart of the house, arranged with two separate seating areas and a fireplace that anchors the space during cooler evenings. Nearby, a large dining room connects naturally to the newly renovated kitchen, creating an easy setting for shared meals after a day exploring the islands. A smaller television lounge offers a quieter corner, while a bathroom finished with traditional Faroese basalt floor tiles reflects the local materials used throughout the home.

Sleeping accommodations are arranged across three levels. Two attic bedrooms sit beneath the sloping roof on the upper floor, accessed by original staircases dating back to the house’s early construction. One of these attic rooms includes a vintage desk once used in the post office director’s office in Tórshavn, adding a small connection to the islands’ history. The basement level contains a spacious bedroom along with a modern bathroom and laundry area, creating additional privacy within the home.

Outdoor life centers around the surrounding village and the nearby water. The fjord sits just beyond the house, where the sound of waves and seabirds becomes part of daily life. From here, coastal walks, mountain trails, and neighboring villages are easily reached by car. Vágar Airport is only a short drive away, while the capital city of Tórshavn lies across the islands’ tunnel network.

The Faroe Islands have drawn increasing attention from travelers and publications such as National Geographic for their dramatic landscapes and preserved Nordic culture. Within Sandavágur, this restored nineteenth-century house offers a rare opportunity to experience that setting within one of the village’s earliest homes.

This residence suits travelers drawn to history, coastal scenery, and the slower rhythm of life along the North Atlantic fjords

Because the house preserves much of its original structure, two of the interior staircases date back to the early nineteenth century and remain relatively steep by modern standards. These staircases are part of the home’s historic character but may make the property less suitable for guests with mobility challenges or very young children.
