Description

Tucked along 330 feet of pristine beachfront in La Saladitas, Casa del Surfista is a masterfully designed tropical haven by renowned architect and artist Gustavo Jasso. This elegant 1.5-acre estate seamlessly blends natural textures, artistic architecture, and warm coastal charm to create a private oasis ideal for family reunions, group retreats, or tranquil escapes. Framed by lush greenery and kissed by the ocean breeze, the property embodies barefoot luxury in its purest form.

At the heart of the estate lies the open-air palapa pavilion—a dramatic communal space that merges two inviting living rooms, a central dining area, and a fully appointed kitchen under soaring thatched ceilings. A wraparound pool flows gracefully through this space, while soft beach sand and swaying palms echo the serenity of the surf just steps beyond. With five unique sleeping quarters, including a traditional cabana and a lofted retreat—the layout offers flexible accommodations for up to 20 guests, all with the comforts of air conditioning and en suite bathrooms.

Casa del Surfista was designed with gatherings and experiences in mind. The open-air loft features three kings (or six twin beds), perfect for a bunk-style setup for cousins or groups. A separate cabana offers quiet privacy, while multiple king bedrooms invite relaxation with soothing ocean rhythms in the background. Each space is thoughtfully curated, drawing inspiration from the region’s culture and natural surroundings. Guests may enjoy locally prepared meals from the on-site chef, take part in cooking classes, or book a yoga retreat complete with Thai massage in the comfort of the estate.

Beyond the gates lies adventure: from world-class surfing at La Saladitas, just a mile away, to excursions like snorkeling at Isla Ixtapa, mud bathing in natural hot springs, or exploring Zihuatanejo’s artisan markets. With its direct beach access and minimal crowds, the estate also offers a tranquil surf break right out front, and is just a short trip from the legendary longboard wave known as “The Wave Machine.”

Whether soaking in the salt air from a hammock, sharing stories by candlelight in the palapa, or catching waves at sunrise, Casa del Surfista invites guests to experience Mexico's Pacific coast at its most authentic and luxurious. This is more than a getaway, it’s a soulful retreat by the sea.

Pam's Property, Mexico

The Good: Pam's property is in a truly spectacular, secluded location with stunning 180-degree sunset views from the main living area. The house offers plenty of space to relax, comfortable beds, a nice pool, and beautiful bird watching throughout the day. The peaceful setting was exactly what we hoped for when gathering 10 surfing family members from around the world to celebrate my sister's 40th birthday. Areas of Concern- Pre-Arrival Stress: There was significant worry that our reservation might be cancelled prior to arrival, which caused considerable stress given that 10 people had already purchased international flights. This uncertainty was difficult to manage. Food Package - Major Issue: We were essentially required to take the "all-inclusive" food option (approximately $3,500 USD / $5,000 AUD) since the indoor kitchen wasn't functioning. While the first 2-3 days were acceptable, the quality and variety deteriorated significantly. The cooking was very basic, done at a makeshift outdoor dirt-floor kitchen, and didn't reflect even the standard of local cafés. By the end of the week, we were eating out almost completely. The kids only enjoyed the guacamole. Given the amount paid, this felt like extremely poor value - we estimate perhaps $50/day was actually spent on groceries for 10 people. For this price $5000AUD, we could have rented comparable properties in the area. If doing this again, I'd strongly recommend a day-by-day payment arrangement rather than paying upfront. Property Maintenance: The house (built around 2008) is showing its age, particularly for a seaside location: 2 out of 4 bedroom doors don't lock (would require new door installation to fix) Upper room had a mouse problem Multiple non-functioning kitchen appliances Pizza oven was broken (would have been a nice feature!) Hot water is extremely limited - most of us had cold showers all week, with only occasional lukewarm water at best. Language Barrier: Felix the caretaker is pleasant, but none of the staff speak English, which created some communication challenges. Bottom Line: We ultimately had a nice family gathering thanks to the beautiful location and space, being surfers we like camping and nature etc, more posh guests would complain more. However, the poor value on the mandatory food package ($5,000 AUD spent with minimal return) created genuine bitterness within our group. Combined with the property maintenance issues and pre-arrival uncertainty, this stay didn't meet expectations for a Thirdhome exchange. The location saves this from a lower rating, but significant improvements are needed - The bathrooms need renovation and the main roof looks like it needs replacing due to mold on the inside. Would we return? No, we would look at other hosts and properties in the area.”
